Add and subtract to 20 worksheets
Add with ten frames, add or take away within 20, then cross ten and find the missing number. Choose worksheet options below.
How to use this worksheet
- On level 1, count the dots in the frames: a full frame is ten.
- Count on from the first number to add, or count back to take away.
- Write the answer or the missing number in the box, then say the whole equation aloud.
Choose your practice
Choose adding with ten frames to 17, adding or taking away within the same ten, or crossing ten with one number missing. This activity uses numbers rather than picture themes.
Use counters, fingers or the number line on levels 2 and 3, and let the child say the answer aloud before writing it.
Changing the practice level creates a fresh version. For another sheet at the same level, use the New practice sheet button. Save the settings link or add the sheet to a pack to keep that version. Tracing keeps the same correct forms and varies their arrangement or path lengths.
Age guidance is approximate. Print on A4 or US Letter paper. The instructor key follows the same worksheet options and paper size.

Questions about this activity
Why do the first sheets avoid crossing ten?
Adding to a teen number without crossing ten, such as 12 + 3, lets a child count on from the ones. Crossing ten, such as 8 + 5, means making a ten first, which is harder. Level 3 does cross ten, so try it when the first two levels feel comfortable.
How does the ten frame help with adding?
Level 1 shows a full frame for the ten, a second frame for the ones in the first number and open dots for the number being added. Point to each dot once, count on from the ones, then write the total.
Should my child use fingers or the number line?
Either one helps. Fingers, counters and the number line at the foot of levels 2 and 3 all let a child count on or back. As confidence grows, move from objects to the number line to saying the answer aloud.
