Number order worksheets
Write the number that comes before, after or between. Count up and count back. Choose worksheet options below.
How to use this worksheet
- Read the number that is given in each box.
- Count on one for the number after, count back one for the number before, or find the number between its neighbours.
- Say the finished numbers aloud in order to check them.
Choose your practice
Choose before and after to 10, before, after and between to 15, or rows of boxes to 20 that count up or back. This activity uses numbers rather than picture themes.
Count along a number line or with objects first, then ask the child to write the missing number.
Changing the practice level creates a fresh version. For another sheet at the same level, use the New practice sheet button. Save the settings link or add the sheet to a pack to keep that version. Tracing keeps the same correct forms and varies their arrangement or path lengths.
Age guidance is approximate. Print on A4 or US Letter paper. The instructor key follows the same worksheet options and paper size.

Questions about this activity
How does a child find the number before, after or between?
Count on one from a number to find the number after it, and count back one to find the number before it. For a number between two others, say both neighbours aloud and find the one that fits in the middle.
What do the arrows mean?
An arrow pointing right means count up, so each box is one more than the box before it. An arrow pointing left means count back, so each box is one less. Read the numbers that are given before filling the empty boxes.
How is this different from the number sequences activity?
Number order uses steps of one only, and practises the number before, the number after and the number between. Number sequences counts by 1, 2 or 5 and has one empty box in each row of five.
Age labels are approximate guidance. Choose practice that suits the child. See printing help for A4, US Letter, colour and black-and-white settings, or browse other activities.
