How to use this worksheet

  1. Count the starting group and read the subtraction beside it.
  2. Cross out the number of pictures being taken away.
  3. Count the pictures that remain and write the answer. Write 0 when every picture has been crossed out.

Choose your practice

Choose subtraction within 3, within 5 or within 10. The instructor key shows both the cross-outs and the remaining total. Use New practice sheet for another set of numbers at the same level.

Begin within 3 using real counters: count the starting group, remove the requested amount, then count what remains. On paper, count only pictures that have not been crossed out. An adult can write the answer. Talk about 0 as none left; taking away 0 leaves the starting quantity unchanged. Move to within 5 or 10 when the smaller groups feel comfortable.

Changing the practice level creates a fresh version. For another sheet at the same level, use the New practice sheet button. Save the settings link or add the sheet to a pack to keep that version. Tracing keeps the same correct forms and varies their arrangement or path lengths.

Age guidance is approximate. Print on A4 or US Letter paper. Choose outlines to save ink or pre-coloured pictures to start the activity without colouring. The instructor key follows the same worksheet options and paper size.
