How to use this worksheet

  1. Look at the number: the first digit tells how many tens and the second how many ones.
  2. Count a full frame as ten, then count the ones one by one.
  3. Draw the ones, write the digits or write the number, as the sheet asks.

Choose your practice

Choose drawing the ones in a second frame (level 1), writing the tens, the ones and the number from the frames (level 2) or mixed rows up to 30 (level 3). Levels 1 and 2 stay in the teens, from 11 to 19. Level 3 turns numbers into tens and ones, tens and ones into numbers and frames into numbers. There is no picture set or colour option; use New practice sheet for more practice at the same level.

Use two real piles, ten counters in one and the ones in the other, before the sheet. Say each number aloud as tens and ones, such as twenty-seven is two tens and seven ones. Cover the other rows with plain paper if the page feels busy.

Changing the practice level creates a fresh version. For another sheet at the same level, use the New practice sheet button. Save the settings link or add the sheet to a pack to keep that version. Tracing keeps the same correct forms and varies their arrangement or path lengths.

Age guidance is approximate. Print on A4 or US Letter paper. The instructor key follows the same worksheet options and paper size.

Questions about this activity

How is this different from Ten frames?

The Ten frames sheets practise making and completing ten. This activity is about place value: a teen number is one ten and some ones, and the frames show which part is the ten and which part is the ones. It then goes on to numbers up to 30.

Why does the sheet say 1 ten but 2 tens?

One ten and one one are singular, and two or more tens or ones are plural. The sheets use the matching form each time, so the words on the page are the words a child will hear and say.

What does 0 ones mean?

A number such as 20 or 30 is made of tens only, so it has 0 ones. The ones box holds a 0 and the frames show full tens with no extra dots. Level 3 includes these numbers so a child can see what the 0 stands for.

Age labels are approximate guidance. Choose practice that suits the child. See printing help for A4, US Letter, colour and black-and-white settings, or browse other activities.
